Recs for AAPI Heritage Month + Asian Readathon

May is a very big month: it’s my birthday month, there’s mother’s day and also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month and Cindy from cindyreads hosts the Asian Readathon which is a month-long readathon for the month of May that she hosts every year. This readathon has different prompts to encourage you to discover new books and read more by those who are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent/heritage. Here’s the link: Asian Readathon

In this blog post, I will highlight some of my favourite books by Asian authors (Asian, Asian-American, Asian-Canadian as well because I am Canadian too) and, if possible, those who are of the Pacific Islanders. I will, as well, give my recommendations for the Asian readathon!

AAPI Heritage month recs:

  • Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

  • Jade City by Fonda Lee

  • The Keeper of Night Kylie Lee Baker

  • Alone out Here by Riley Redgate

  • Silence of Bones by June Hur

  • The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He

  • Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

  • Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

  • Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel

  • Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

  • The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri

  • The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

  • The Ivory Key by Akshaya Raman

  • Forest of Souls by Lori M. Lee

  • How High we go in the dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

  • Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

Here is my TBR (to-be-read) for the Asian readathon! I don’t do TBRs often because a) I am a mood reader and b) I don’t like being constricted to books (see also, point a) but I am trying to actively start reading the books on my shelf (and use my library more often) so, here goes:

  1. A book by an Asian author: The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

  2. A book with an Asian woman and/or a character that’s older: Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel

  3. A book with a universe different from yours/ you want to visit: Jade City by Fonda Lee

  4. A book with a cover worth of googly eyes: The Forest of Stolen Girls by June Hur

  5. A book highly recommended: Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

I can’t promise I will actually follow this tbr (whoops) except for the fact that I will read The Poppy War for sure because it is the May Musaeum Society pick, and you can check out the announcement here!

Well, that is all for that, hope you guys have found some new recommendations!

Love,

Mila
