A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I did it! I ended up in Westeros and climbed out after finishing the book lol. Just a heads up that this review contains spoilers for the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire called A Game of Thrones. Please read at your own discretion.

So, the main reason why I decided to give this book a shot despite years of saying that I will not start the series until Martin releases the next two books are simple: edits from House of the Dragon of Rhaenyra Targaryen because she is a Boss Queen and Daenarys Targaryen from the show Game of Thrones. I mean, who wouldn’t be convinced by cool edits of two badass women 300 years apart that had dragons.

Here are a few things I enjoyed:

  • The whole lore of the Targaryen’s and just the world of Westeros and political intrigue of the story

  • The chapters of everyone besides Bran because his chapters were just so boring and I frankly cannot tell you why I found them boring, I was just counting down until the next chapter from Jon or Daenerys. I also enjoyed Tyrion’s POV as well. I think he's so clever and because he's a dwarf and often called "The Imp", people underestimate him and his intelligence greatly.

  • Some of the dialogue is really, really great and some of the lines are just absolute bangers

  • Sansa deserves the world, cannot believe Martin is putting her through hell

  • Ned Stark *sobs*

  • The Hound is probably going to end up being one of my favourite characters fr

Some of the things I did not like:

  • The fact that Daenerys is 13 when she gets married off and 14 when she gets pregnant just drives me bonkers and I mentally aged her up to what she was in the show (around 18 I think?)

  • Cersei Lannister, I cannot stand you

  • Joffrey is terrible and I want to climb into the book and slap him

  • The amount of vulgarity - I'm no stranger to the time period this reflects but anytime someone was called a wh*re or a sl*t, my skin crawled
    - I knew going in that it's spice heavy (pardon my usage of TikTok terms) but oh boy, it's spice heavy

  • YOUR TWIN BROTHER, CERSEI? "The Targaryen’s wed brother to sister for hundreds of years" GIRLYPOP, SHUT UP. You just have to assume that incest doesn't work in Westeros the same way it does in the real world although some might say otherwise...looking at you, Joffrey

Well, I don’t have a lot of thoughts to talk about because I sort of read this with not a lot of braincells (although I do understand the negative reviews and how people see the books are misogynistic.)

Well, hope you enjoyed this very quick review and if you want a more in-depth review (a.k.a me just rambling forever), I will leave the link for the YouTube video down below as well as the link to my Instagram post which is essentially just a shorter version of this review.
